After working his way up the ranks as a rapper, producer, curator, and high-octane live performer, Travis Scott’s 2018 album Astroworld elevated him to the status of pop culture demigod. Years of studying the maximalism of Kanye West led to a project where booming 808s and Memphis-style chants rubbed against Stevie Wonder harmonica solos and features from a who’s who of established and rising stars. In that album’s wake, Travis’ celebrity and influence grew exponentially: He became the face of ad campaigns for McDonald’s, Sony, and Fortnite; was tapped to write a song for director Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster thriller Tenet; and started the massive Astroworld Festival.
But all those accomplishments and co-signs were severely undercut when tragedy struck 2021’s Astroworld Festival, where a crush of concertgoers led to 10 deaths, hundreds of injuries, and many lawsuits filed against Travis and Live Nation. (Just last month, a Houston grand jury decided not to indict the rapper on criminal charges related to the event.) Travis has kept largely silent on the incident in the years since, heightening the curiosity around his long-awaited Astroworld follow-up, Utopia. The new record comes with a companion film, Circus Maximus, that features direction from arthouse faves including Gaspar Noé, Nicolas Winding Refn, and Harmony Korine. (A planned concert at Egypt’s Pyramids of Giza was canceled at the last minute.) With all eyes on Travis once again, here are five early takeaways from Utopia.
Feature City, population: every vocalist ever?!
It’s a given that a Travis Scott album will come with a boatload of features, and Utopia is no different. Like on Astroworld, their names are not included on the official tracklist, but the album’s 19 songs boast a staggering amount of vocal talent from across rap, R&B, and pop: Bad Bunny and SZA, 21 Savage and Westside Gunn, Teezo Touchdown and Sampha, Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and Young Thug. The biggest get is Beyoncé, who offers up some Renaissance-style ballroom strut to “Delresto (Echos),” while Drake turns the first half of “Meltdown” into a dead-eyed taunt session that may be aimed at Pharrell (who, coincidentally, co-produced “Looove” further down the tracklist) and his old nemesis Pusha-T: “I melt down the chains that I bought from your boss/Give a fuck about all of that heritage shit/Since V not around, the members done hung up the Louis/They not even wearing that shit.”

Utopia also features a small army’s worth of production talent both old and new to the Travis Scott universe. Mentor Kanye West shows up to add some flourishes to “Thank God,” while Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo helps to bring a steady, Yeezus-esque pulse to “Modern Jam.” Returning producers include Tay Keith, Wheezy, WondaGurl, and Boi-1da, while the Alchemist, James Blake, and Dominic Maker of Mount Kimbie are among the new recruits. And, of course, Travis brings his own production to the lion’s share of the album, gluing everything together.
