SOLLYY: “No Assumptions” [ft. Dylan Atlantis]
One of the most fulfilling parts about tapping into a regional rap scene is that you can feel like you’ve dropped into an area without ever actually stepping foot there. That happened when I listened to “No Assumptions” by SOLLYY and Dylan Atlantis, two artists from Western Sydney, Australia. The music video grabbed me first. It’s bright and uses reverse motion almost as much as the movie Tenet. Most of the time you’re just watching them do shit around their city: hitting donuts with their car, posting up outside of apartment complexes, banging their heads in open grass fields. The song is good too: SOLLYY and Dylan’s voices are clashing yet complementary. Dylan is the silky R&B singer, sliding in with the laid-back cool of Brent Faiyaz on “Crew.” SOLLY is the brash and forceful rapper, always sounding like he’s recording through a megaphone, even when he’s just repping his hometown: “Claimin’ you a fuckin’ city boy/I’ma Sydney boy/Born and bred out the Westside/We get litty boy.” I’ve got no choice but to believe him.
With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
