Back at the Maajins show, the headliner burned through his mixtape deep cuts for over an hour. I caught pieces of beats I never heard before (the popping background noise on “Snooze U Lose,” the brief appearances of Lex Luger–style snare rolls on “Golf”), which rarely happens at live shows where the intricacies often get drowned out by the 808s. The drums at the end of “bonzai” made me feel like I was at Mardi Gras. I was hoping he’d end his set with “Blatts,” but he and his DJ couldn’t find it on their laptop. Unfazed, he closed with “Enjoy the Ride,” a song of his I hadn’t spent that much time with. The first half of the instrumental sounds like wind chimes jingling around in a storm. Then, in the second part, there are sharp, fast-paced drums and a faded, loudmouthed vocal sample, making it like Miami bass meets Jersey club meets footwork. As soon as I got home, I went on YouTube to keep digging.

Yeah, bizarre. Kind of entertaining video, though. But, for me, I never got the Lud Foe thing. His voice isn’t super captivating, so I couldn’t feel energized from his music like I was supposed to be. Good for the Cowboys team, if that’s what gets them to going to the tourney.

Lance “Un” Rivera is a hip-hop bagman who, in the ’90s and 2000s, was known for his close ties to Biggie and an infamous altercation with Jay-Z. Sometime in the mid-aughts, he pivoted to directing and writing movies, and none of them were good. His second flick was The Perfect Holiday, a glorified Lifetime Christmas movie so hamfisted that not even the charm of a Morris Chestnut and Gabrielle Union relationship could save it. The weirdest stuff in the movie belongs to Queen Latifah and Terrence Howard’s roles as Christmas angels who narrate the story and get into some hi-jinks on the side. It’s a painfully boring bit, but the elegant swag of Queen Latifah’s speaking voice at least gives it a redeemable quality. I have real beef, though, with Morris Chestnut’s sideplot as an aspiring R&B singer; he’s way too buff for me to believe he can sing (apologies to Tank).
