FearDorian: “Bankhead Freestyle”
A few of my favorite beats of the past year have been made by Atlanta’s FearDorian, a teenager with a sometimes jerky, sometimes atmospheric production style that brings the best out of rappers. Consider the turbulent bounce of Xaviersobased’s “Upper West,” the hypnotic rhythm of AyooLii’s “Andele,” and the sample-based madness of the snippet “Sk8terboy,” which is already my most played Polo Perks song since Punk Goes Drill. There are beats FearDorian keeps for himself to rap over, too, like “Bankhead Freestyle.” This one is a twinkling, misty instrumental with a little oomph. His straightforward flow is buried under the beat in a way that brings to mind older tracks from Awful Records’ Ethereal, a producer first, rapper second who achieved the kind of cult status that FearDorian is inching toward.
With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
